Rebel Wilson Heads a Humerous Love Triangle in Isn’t It Romantic

Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, and Adam LeVine are about to get caught up in a Valentine’s Day love triangle. The trio is set to appear in New Line Cinema’s latest rom com Isn’t It Romantic. The film is a play on the traditional romantic comedy format and features a plot were a character from the real world becomes trapped inside an actual rom com.

The character is Natalie, played hilariously by Rebel Wilson in her first turn as a leading lady. Although the film follows a traditional romantic comedy format, it is also completely self-aware and not shy of making fun of itself.

The main story revolves around Natalie, a New York City architect, who becomes trapped within a rom-com after a nasty tussle with a thief. According to a recent interview Wilson did the rom com world is Natalie’s worst nightmare. Apparently, she is a jaded and long ago gave up the unrealistic happy endings rom coms vouch for. “Now that she is stuck,” Rebel stated, “She has to figure out how to get out.” Read more: Isn’t it Romantic Trailer | Glamour and Pitch Perfect for Rebel Wilson | VanityFair

If this plot sounds familiar it’s because other movies have used it as well most notably Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day. Although Natalie won’t be suffering the same day over and over again she still will experience a skewed version of reality. The fun part is that skewed version also skews romantic comedies.

According to director Todd Strauss-Schulson he binged watched romantic comedies endlessly to prepare for Isn’t It Romantic. It certainly shows as all the well-known tropes are represented with flair. Almost immediately after being knocked out Natalie wakes up in a big bed with full hair and make-up already on. Her apartment is the size of a professional sports stadium and she has a closet filled full of designer clothes.

Clothes that no normal person could ever afford in such quantity operating under Natalie’s salary. The New York outside her window is the picture-perfect postcard always present in rom coms. The great thing about Isn’t It Romantic is it appears to play the humor straight. Natalie is completely self-aware of her situation and even figures out her rom-com is PG-13.

Isn’t It Romantic marks Wilson’s first time as a leading lady. The Aussie-actress made it big in her native Australia before venturing across the sea to the states. Her first big role was as Brynn in Bridesmaids, but her name-making role came later as Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect. Now as Natalie Wilson has the chance to take her career to the next level.

As for Liam Hemsworth and Adam LeVine they get to fill out the supporting roles. Hemsworth plays Blake, a client Natalie becomes involved with, and LeVine stars as Josh, Natalie’s best friend and unexpected love interest. LeVine formally played opposite Wilson as Bumper in Pitch Perfect.
