According to Ara Chackerian, most people cannot talk about suicide openly because of the stigma that comes with suicide. Suicide claims more than 100 lives in America every day but still it has not received the much attention that it deserves. Most people even those who are undergoing suicidal thoughts find it hard to share with others about what they are going through because of stigma. Ara goes ahead to claim that without the stigma associated with suicide coming to an end, there are chances that the suicide will keep claiming more lives. He encourages those who are going through emotional challenges to openly share experience because through that way they will receive support as well as help to the issues. The Invincible Exposure of Joe Arpaio by Larkin and Lacey

Shortly after their publication that exposed Sheriff Arpaio, Jim Larkin and Lacey were invaded in their homes by a battalion of law enforcement officers sent under the orders of the Sheriff. The families of the two men, who were the owners of an Arizona’s publication Phoenix News Times were bamboozled by the attack because they had no idea about what had caused the incidences.

However, their husbands knew very well that they had crossed the sheriff’s line and so they anticipated everything. What the two journalists had done was the exposure of a Grand Jury that had been formed by the sheriff to investigate and perform extra-judicial executions on the immigrants who they had discriminated for long. Joe Arpaio had become the Sheriff of Maricopa County back in 1992. Since then, the sheriff and his administration had been so harsh and cruel to the Hispanic and Latino communities. They treated them with a lot of brutality and discrimination to the extent that they could even arrest and execute them with no offense.

The treatment was so cruel that Lacey and Larkin felt they could not withstand it anymore. This resulted in their publication of the issue in one of the columns in their paper. This did not augur well with Sheriff Arpaio, and so he ordered their immediate arrests, hence the astonishing knocks on their doors at night.

After the invasion, the two were hurled into police land rovers that dragged them to the prison where they were jailed in separate police cells that were under the heavy guard by the county’s administration police officers. They spent the whole night there and then morning came the following day. When people woke up in the morning, they heard what had transpired during the night, and they were very mad about it.

They felt that the county administration had gone too far in testing their patience by arresting their voices. The public and the campus students went on to the streets demonstrating against the heinous acts of Arpaio and his government. They demanded the exoneration of the two journalists who they claimed had been detained illegally.

Arpaio later gave in to the demands and released Michael Lacey and Larkin the same day. However, the duo felt that their first amendment rights had been blatantly violated by Joe Arpaio and so they decided to seek justice by opening a lawsuit against the sheriff.

The court battles continued for a while before the judges came into conclusion. Luckily, in 2013, the judge of the Court of Appeal ruled in their favor and ordered Maricopa County Government to pay restitution of $3.75 to the duo.

Larkin And Lacey Turned The Table On America’s Most Notorious Sheriff

Widespread public outrage and condemnation broke out across America last August when President Donald Trump announced that he would issue a full pardon to a notorious convicted felon — the former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Arpaio had been found guilty of criminal contempt for the way he arrested, harassed and jailed undocumented immigrants. Under the direct orders of Sheriff Arpaio, Maricopa County deputies engaged in rampant racial profiling of anyone they suspected of being in the U.S. illegally. They often stopped and harassed even ordinary American citizens if they so much as looked to be of Hispanic heritage. Violating the U.S. Constitution was nothing new to Arpaio. In 2007, in a brazen disregard for the 1st Amendment, Sheriff Arpaio ordered the arrest of two Phoenix-based media men — Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey — owners of Village Voice Media.

Village Voice is a chain of alternative, weekly newspapers operating in many locations across America. It’s flagship operation was the Phoenix New Times. It was articles published in this newspaper that raised the ire of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and pushed him over the edge. He sent a squad of his goons in unmarked police vehicles to the homes of Larkin and Lacey in the middle of the night. The two men were summarily arrested and tossed in jail.

Public outrage soon followed. The arrest of two journalists who were just doing their jobs was too much even for some of Sheriff Arpaio conservative, anti-immigrant supporters. Larkin and Lacey won their release from jail and charges were dropped.

But the media men decided to sue Maricopa County for the outrageous actions of Sheriff Arpaio – -and they won. A Federal Court of Appeals judge awarded Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey a whopping $3.7 million in damages.

It was then that the two venerable media men decided to do something special. Rather than just pocket the millions they had just been awarded, they used the money to establish the Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund, a nonprofit social action organization dedicated to helping the very groups that were persecuted by Sheriff Arpaio. The bitter irony for the criminally convicted Sheriff of Maricopa County was that his brutal police tactics had actually produced a huge source of aid and comfort for the very people he had treated with such cruel disregard.

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey had spoken truth to power, fought “The Man” in court and struck a blow for the “Good Guys” in one of the most legendary incidents in Arizona history.
